Alright, so this is a story I've started writing over the summer called 15. Please let me know what you think about it.
I already knew today was going to be special. My cell phone rang as soon as I got out of bed. Looking at the caller I.D., I saw that it was my boyfriend and I answered it in a hurry.
“Happy birthday, Bridget,” Austin said as soon as I picked up.
I smiled. “Aww. You remembered.”
“How could I forget my girl’s special day?”
“True. Are we still on for tonight?”
“Yea. I got Michael to bring his girlfriend, too. It’ll be like a double date.”
Austin and Michael are twins and both are extremely cute. Austin and I have been going out for almost three years now, and he’s only a year older than me. He has dark brown hair and deep blue eyes. His brother has light brown hair and sea-blue eyes.
Two years ago, I got my best friend Arina to go out with Michael, and they’ve been together ever since. I’ve known Arina for nearly fourteen years ago. She has brown hair that’s just a little darker than Michael’s and red eyes. She’s only a couple days younger than me, but we never let that bother us.
“Bridget! Come down here!” my Aunt Katie called.
“I’ll be right down!” I called back. “So I guess I’ll see you tonight?”
“Yes. I’ll be there around seven,” Austin said.
“Alright, I’ll be waiting,” I said. After I put the phone on my dresser, I ran downstairs and saw that Arina was waiting for me.
“Well, good morning, birthday girl,” Aunt Katie said. She was sitting at the kitchen table and Arina was on the other side. It looked like they were talking while I was in my room.
“Good morning. Hey, Ari, what’re you doing here? Shouldn’t you be getting ready for tonight? ” I asked.
“Well, I thought I should take you out to go get you a present,” Ari said. “We should probably get going so we can find something you would like.”
“Sure. Aunt Katie, is it alright if I –”
“It’s fine with me. Just be sure you pick out something nice,” my aunt said.
Ari grabbed my hand and pulled me out the door. Outside, Arina’s brother was waiting in his black Porsche, and we got in.
“Bye, Bridget. Be safe,” I heard Aunt Katie say before I closed the door.
Andrew turned around in his seat. As always, he was wearing his dark sunglasses and a Yankees hat. For some reason, he always hides the way he looks when he’s with other people.
“Are you two ready to go?” he asked.
“Sure Andrew,” Ari said. “We better hurry so we can get back in time to get ready.” She looked at me. “By the way, your aunt said she was going to leave your present in your room.”
“I’ll have to make sure I look at it when I get back later,” I said.
The three of us talked – well, Ari and I, since Andrew’s not much of a talking type – until we got to the mall.
As Arina and I climbed out of the car, Andrew rolled down the window. “Call me when you’re done,” he said.
“You don’t have to worry about us,” Ari said. “I’ll call when were ready to go or if we come across any trouble.”
We went inside and Andrew drove off. After an hour of searching three stores, I couldn’t find anything I liked. When we came to the fifth store, I finally saw something – a strapless aquamarine dress. Ari looked around, too, trying to see if she liked anything. She had stopped at one rack and picked out a sky blue dress.
I walked over to her. “If you’re going to get me a birthday present, then I’ll do the same for you,” I told her.
“Bee, you don’t have to do that,” she said.
“I mean it. Since we’re here, I might as well. You can just think of it as an early present.”
She didn’t try to argue with me. We tried on the dresses and looked in the mirror, then at each other. We were sure that they were perfect for us.
We bought the dresses, called Andrew, and got in his car when he got there. Within a few minutes, I was back at my house and I went up to my room. On my bed, there was something that looked like a box wrapped with silver paper.
I looked to see if there was a card anywhere on it, but I couldn’t find one. I tore off the paper and saw that it was actually a book. Little did I know that this book would be the biggest clue to what would happen tonight.
From the time I started reading the book to right now, it had been about three hours. As it would turn out, it was a journal with an entry by each generation of my family.
When I turned the page, I noticed that the next entry was written exactly fifteen years ago on the day I was born – July 30th.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I read what my mother had written, but what did she mean by ‘the Hunters are looking for us’? I couldn’t make any sense of it.
I looked at the mirror on my dresser, and I could swear I saw my normally emerald eyes glow bright green.
Aunt Katie knocked on the door. “Bridget, shouldn’t you be getting ready? It’s almost seven.”
“Oh. I almost forgot about it. Thanks, Aunt Katie,” I said.
She left me alone to get ready. How could I forget? Austin was supposed to pick me up in a few minutes, and I wasn’t anywhere close to being ready to leave.
Quickly, I put on the dress Arina had gotten me earlier and looked in the mirror again. My eyes were their normal color, but for some reason, I felt as if something about me was changing, like I was a different person.
I shook my head. Snap out of it! I told myself. I shouldn’t be worrying about this. After all, today’s my birthday.
I started down the stairs and looked out the window in the family room. Austin wasn’t here yet, so I still had some time left.
Aunt Katie came up behind me. “Make a wish,” she said and held out a cupcake. The candle’s flame danced around, almost seeming happy that I was close to it.
I closed my eyes and blew out the candle.
“Happy birthday, Bridget,” Aunt Katie said, wrapping her arms around me. “Your Uncle Max would have loved to see you right now.”
I nodded and returned the hug. “I still can’t believe it’s almost been a whole year since he died.”
My Uncle Max was almost like a father to me ever since I’ve lived with him and Aunt Katie. He worked at a grocery store, so we didn’t have that much money in the house, but he always found a way for us to do something. Last October, he was on his way home in his old truck when someone ran a light and hit him head-on.
Our silent moment was interrupted when we heard someone knock on the front door. I went to the door and opened it.
“Hey, Bridget,” Austin said. “Are you ready to go?”
I turned and looked at my aunt. “Go on,” she told me. “I’ll save this for when you get back.” She started to wrap the cupcake in aluminum foil and put it on the kitchen table.
I smiled and grabbed Austin’s hand and walked out the door. Before I got in his mustang, I waved to my aunt, who was looking out of the window.
Within twenty minutes of riding down the road, we arrived at a small, but good restaurant. Arina and Michael were waiting for us at the entrance. I hadn’t noticed before, but both Michael and Austin were wearing black suits.
Inside, a young waitress took us to our table. “Do you all know what you would like to drink?” she asked once we were all sitting.
Austin answered her for us – a tea for me and Michael and water for him and Arina
We had out drinks in a couple of minutes and told the waitress what we were having.
“So,” Ari said as soon as the waitress left. “What did your aunt put in your room?” I could see she was smiling. Did she know what I got?
“Yeah, I did,” I answered her. “Aunt Katie put a book in my room.”
“What’s it about? Or have you even looked at it yet?”
“I’ve looked through it. I just don’t really understand it very well.”
“What about it don’t you understand?” Michael asked. “Who knows, I’ve probably read it already.”
“Well…” Was it alright to tell them about it? “It’s like a journal, with an entry from each generation. The last entry was from my mother fifteen years ago. She said someone was looking for her for some reason. With what she wrote, that person was going to try to kill her and my dad. She even mentioned something about your family, Ari.”
“Yeah, well, our parents were the best of friends, just like we are,” Arina shrugged.
Austin looked at me. “You said that someone was looking for them, but did she say who it was?”
I shook my head. “She just said that the ‘Hunters’ were looking for them.”
Austin and Michael looked at each other in silence.
Ari stood up. “Bridget, can you come with me for a minute?”
I nodded and followed her into the bathroom.
She locked the door once she was sure we were the only people in there. “They said something about you, didn’t they?” she asked, looking me in the eyes.
I nodded. “But what difference does it make? I couldn’t make any sense of it.”
“It does make a difference. Now what did she say?”
I looked at the floor. “They said I would be like them when the time comes.”
Arina relaxed. “Bee, you don’t realize what your mother was saying?”
I shook my head.
“And you haven’t noticed anything different about yourself?”
I hesitated. “Well… I did notice something when I was looking in the mirror earlier. Wait. How did you know about that?”
“Because I’ve gone through the same thing last year,” Ari said. “I know exactly how you feel. The only difference is I had my parents to help me get through it. The only one you have to help you is me. That is, if you want me to help you.”
Someone knocked on the door. “Are you two alright?” Michael asked.
“We’re fine,” Ari answered. She turned to me. “Just think about it. You would probably need all the support you can get.” She unlocked the door and walked back to the table.
When I sat down, the food was already at the table, and Austin and Michael – well, mainly Michael – looked worried.
Austin looked at me. “Anything wrong?” he asked.
“No… Not really,” I answered, picking up my fork. “I just have some stuff to think about, that’s all.”
It took us almost an hour for us to finish eating, but when we did, we walked outside of the restaurant after we paid. Andrew and I got in his Mustang and Ari and Michael got in his yellow Corvette.
We all went to the park to walk around. Before Austin got out of the car, he put on a jacket he had in the back seat.
The sun had already gone down and the sky was clear, so we stopped to sit on a bench.
After a few minutes, Andrew got up, saying there was something he had been told to do. I got up and went next to him.
“What have you been told to do?” I asked him.
He turned around and looked at Arina and Michael, still sitting on the bench. “That girl is a danger to us all,” he said.
I looked at my best friend. “What do you mean?”
Andrew didn’t answer. He just watched as his brother put his arm around his girlfriend.
Ari looked at us and smiled, as if she could tell Andrew was talking about her.
Andrew reached into his jacket. “Get behind me and close your eyes,” he said. “This shouldn’t take too long.” He pulled out a small gun he had hidden in a pocket inside his jacket and pointed it at Ari. Without thinking, I grabbed his arm and could feel tears well up in my eyes. Austin looked down at me. “You really are turning into one of them,” he said.
Ari laughed. “She is starting to act like us more every day. You should be more careful of what you do around her.”
I looked at her. “What do you mean? What’s going on?”
Ari looked at Austin. “Do you think you could give us a minute, or do you really want to kill me now?”
I let go of Austin and he put his gun away. “Stupid vampire,” he said and walked away. Michael got up and followed after his brother.
Arina got up from the bench and stood next to me. “Bridget, are you alright?”
I guess she could tell Austin had surprised me so much I was scared. “Yeah, I’ll be fine. But what did he mean by ‘vampire’?”
Ari sighed. “You noticed that, huh? Well, it’s true. I am a vampire, and both of the guys are part of the ‘hunter’ family your mom wrote about.”
“Then does that mean I’m – “
“Yes. You are a vampire as well.” She looked at me. “But that doesn’t mean we go around killing people.”
“Then why do all the old stories tell people that vampires do that?”
“It’s the work of humans that caught us hunting in the woods. The first thing they think when they see that is ‘they’re going to kill me’.”
“Then what were they hunting?”
Ari shrugged. “Just some animals they saw going wherever. That doesn’t mean they all were like that, though.”
“Then what did the others – “
“Why don’t I get Michael to take you home? We can talk more about this in the morning.” She took out her phone and dialed the number. After just a few minutes, Michael came back and took me to my house.
“You can call me in the morning after you thought about what I said,” Ari said.
“You don’t have to worry about that,” I said and walked in my house.
Aunt Katie was already in her room when I came in, to it must have been after ten. I went in my room and sat on my bed. The book was still on my dresser just the way I had left it. I picked it up and read the last entry again.
I wonder if I could… I thought, picking up a pen. I turned the page and tried to write, but the ink would just disappear as soon as I wrote something.
I decided it was useless to keep trying to write something, so I closed the book, wrote a note to myself to call Arina in the morning, and got ready for bed.
It has been over a week since that night at the park. I have been spending most of my time with Ari at her house leaning about vampires and what we do.
Ari told me the other day that our families we supposed to be the only ones left, but fifteen years ago, a group that was well hidden over the centuries came and disrupted the peace our ancestors had founded with the humans. They started to slaughter people that were in the same area that my mother was at, then disappeared, leaving her to blame.
That has been the only thing I could think of since she told me. How could anyone want to make my own mother look like she would betray the trust that was put upon her all those years ago?
“You know,” Ari said, “you haven’t spent any time acting like a normal person since the night at the park.”
I sighed. “You’re right. Maybe we should do something sometime. Maybe we could Invite Michael along with us.”
“And that’s why I’ve already made arrangements to go somewhere today. Go ahead and get ready to go.”
I nodded and went to my room. I guess it was a good thing we were at my house today instead of being at Arina’s. After all, one can only take so much of a cheerful mom that only wants to keep asking you if you need anything every five minutes. I guess Mrs. Wolf just cares about Ari and Andrew, but I think she’s just a little too overprotective of them.
Aunt Katie didn’t seem to mind that Ari was over. I’m not sure about what she thinks about my best friend, but I guess it’s none of my business. She stopped me right before I went in my room.
“Bridget, are you going somewhere?” she asked.
“Ari said she was going to take me somewhere,” I said. “It’s probably just going to be us.”
“Well, let’s hope so. I know how much pain you were in when you came back last Friday. You looked like you had your heart ripped out by someone. Austin didn’t have anything to do with that, did he?”
“Well…” How was I going to tell my aunt that my boyfriend was a vampire hunter and Arina and I were vampires? I simply hated lying to her. “He might have had something to do with it, so we decided to give each other some space for a while.”
“What did he do to you?” Aunt Katie sounded like she was about to have a heart attack if she got any more panicked.
“I actually forgot what it was. Don’t worry. I’m sure it probably won’t happen again.” I closed my door as soon as I got in my room and sighed. What was I going to do? I can’t keep a secret from my aunt, even if she didn’t even bother me about it for a while.
That was pretty much the one thing I couldn’t stand about my personality. In fact, my personality is the complete opposite to Austin’s. I can’t even remember him telling me any of his secrets that he might have been keeping from me for these past three years we’ve been together. I would usually have to find them out for myself, even if it killed me. And trust me, I do not want that to happen.
I shuddered at the thought. Would he really try to kill me? No. I had to trust him, no matter what happened.
I got on a pair of dark jeans and a yellow t-shirt and walked back downstairs. Ari was sitting on the couch reading a book.
“You ready to go?” she asked, still reading.
“Yeah, I’m ready when you are,” I answered her.
“Well, it’ll take a few minutes for Andrew to get here, since he’s getting things at the store for Mom right now. Why don’t you just try to find something to do until he gets here?”
I sat down next to her. “What’re you reading now?” I asked her.
“Oh, it’s just something about vampires falling madly in love with a human. Nothing really special about it, though. You just know that the human girl will die in the end. She doesn’t even stand a chance against the vampires that are trying to get to her.” She shrugged. “But no matter how many times I read it, I can’t help but think that something will change the way it will end.”
I looked at her. “Just how many times have you read that book? It’s got, what, at least five hundred pages to it?”
“I’ve lost count. But like I said, there’s nothing really special about it.” She put her bookmark in its place and closed the book. “You know that after today, we’ll have to start up on your training again.”
I nodded. Of course I would only get one day to be normal, but that’s just the way it is with Ari. She just really likes to get things done as fast as she can so she can do what she wanted to.
Outside, I heard Andrew’s car pull into the driveway. Ari stood up. “Well, I guess we should go now. I have a feeling my brother’s in a bit of a rush today.”
We walked out the house and got in the back of Andrew’s car. When he turned around to look at us, I noticed he wasn’t wearing his hat and sunglasses today. I never realized he looked so… different than I imagined.
“Hey, you two,” he said.
I couldn’t say anything to him. I was just looking at him, speechless. Andrew didn’t look like his sister as much as I would have thought.
He looked at me. “Are you alright, Bridget?” he asked.
I couldn’t say anything. I was too busy looking at his chocolate brown eyes and dark brown hair. All this time, Ari hadn’t told me that her brother was this… Wait. What was I thinking? This was Ari’s brother. I shouldn’t be this surprised. But still…
Arina spoke up. “This is the first time she’s seen you without your hat and glasses, Andrew. She’s probably gone into shock.”
Andrew laughed. “You might be right.” He looked at Ari. “You still want me to drop you off at the movies?”
“Yeah, we should go now. You probably have somewhere to be, don’t you?” Ari said.
“Sure I do, but I don’t have to be there for a while.” He started the engine and started down the road.
Arina put her hand on my shoulder. “Are you going to look like that the whole time? I’m sure the guys don’t want to see you like that.”
I looked at her, shocked. “The guys? You mean Michael and Austin are going to be there?”
“Of course they’ll be there. Do you think I would make us go see a movie without Michael with me? Besides, he insisted that he should bring Austin, too, so he wouldn’t be the only boy.”
I looked down. I couldn’t believe Ari would do this to me now. It was too soon for me to see him. Or at least, that’s what I thought.
It didn’t take much longer for Andrew to get us to the movies, and when I was getting out of his car, I didn’t dare to look at him again, since I might end up staring blankly at him again.
Once we were inside and Andrew drove off, I sighed. Michael was waiting for us beside the door. When he saw us, he came and gave Ari a hug.
“You have absolutely no idea how awful I’ve felt being away from you,” he said.
Ari laughed. “I think I know what you mean.”
I looked around. “Hey, is Austin here? He didn’t bail out on us, did he?”
“He is here, but he did try to get out of coming. He said he didn’t think he was ready to face what he’s done to you.” He looked at me. “But, somehow, I think he’ll manage. Austin’s already got our seats for us, so we shouldn’t keep him waiting for too long.”
A part of me wanted to just run away, but I had to stay, since Ari would just drag me back again. I followed behind Michael and Ari and we went into the dark theatre. From the looks of it, the movie had just started, since other people were just getting to their seats as well.
Austin had gotten us four of the seats on the top row. Ari and Michael sat next to each other and I sat next to Austin.
“Hey,” I said after a few minutes. It felt really weird to talk to him after so long.
“Hey,” he said, keeping his eyes on the screen.
There was another minute of silence. “So… what’ve you been up to?”
Austin shrugged. “There’s nothing for me to do anymore, so I’ve just been around the house and other places. What about you?”
“I’ve just been hanging out with Ari. She’s been trying to teach me about who I am, but I’m not sure if I’m going to catch on.”
He finally looked over at me. “You’re a lot quieter than you usually are,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “I’m still the same person.”
“Yeah, but you don’t act like the girl I knew last week.”
“Well, maybe if you didn’t try to kill my best friend, everything would still be the same. That is, at least it would be for a while.”
“How do you know that it wouldn’t have lasted forever?”
“Arina told me everything. She told me about your family, as well as hers and my own.”
We both fell silent and stayed that way for the rest of the movie.
As soon as the movie was over, we all walked outside. The sky was a bright orange and the clouds had a red outline now that the sun was going down.
Austin grabbed my hand. “I’m sorry,” he said.
I was surprised. Ever since I’ve known him, he’s never apologized for anything. “What are you sorry for?”
“For doing what I did at the park. It wasn’t like me to go off like that on someone, whether it was a vampire or human.”
“It’s your job. You were just doing what was expected of you.”
“But at what cost?” His hand got tighter around mine. “If you hadn’t stopped me, your friend wouldn’t be here right now, Michael wouldn’t forgive me, and you would probably try to get back at me.”
“And what would you do if I did try to get back at you?” I asked. “Would you try to kill me, too?”
“To be honest, I’m not sure if I could stop you. I just can’t see myself doing anything that would end up with you being hurt.”
“And you didn’t think that killing my best friend would hurt me?”
Austin shook his head. “I didn’t even consider it. The only thing I could think of at that time was about my brother’s safety, and, well, I thought Arina would put his life in danger.”
“Don’t you think that if he was in any danger from her, he would have enough sense to stay away from Ari?”
“Well, yes, but – “
I put my hand on his cheek. “Well, I think if they’re happy, then I am, too. Wouldn’t you agree?”
He nodded slowly. “You’re right. If my brother’s happy, then I should be happy for him.”
I dropped my hand so it was on his shoulder. “You know, I can’t understand how your mind works. I mean, one minute you’re just as calm as anyone can be, and the next, it’s just the opposite.”
“Wh- what do you mean? I don’t do that. Right, Michael?”
Ari and Michael were leaning against the wall, too deep into their own conversation to have been paying attention to what we were saying, at least until Austin talked to his brother.
Michael looked at us. “You’re on your own on this one, bro.” He looked back at Ari and they started talking again.
Austin looked at the ground. “I’ve been thinking…”
“What is it?”
“The way Michael feels…. I think I can deal with it if he really loves her. I won’t be happy about him going out with a vampire, but – “
“But you won’t bother him about it. It’s his choice if he really wants to be with her, you know. Just let it go.”
He nodded and closed his eyes. “It’s getting late. You should probably be heading back, right?”
“I don’t have to be back right now. I just think it’d be nice to just hang out and talk some, don’t you?”
Austin smiled and pulled me closer to him. “Yes, that would be great,” he said and brushed his lips against mine.

Double date
From the time I started reading the book to right now, it had been about three hours. As it would turn out, it was a journal with an entry by each generation of my family.
When I turned the page, I noticed that the next entry was written exactly fifteen years ago on the day I was born – July 30th.
Patrick and I have just seen our little girl for the first time and have
decided to name her Bridget after her father’s grandmother. But we have also
just heard terrible news – the Hunters are looking for us.
Since we don’t want Bridget to be in any danger, and she won’t be like
us until her time comes, we will let Patrick’s brother and his wife take care of her.
Bridget, I hope you’ll forgive me. It’s only for the best.
She should be safe since my long time friend Angel Wolf lives close to Max
and Katie and Angel is also going to have a new child in a couple of days..

Chapter 3
True Pain
True Pain
